Incorporating 3x3 Stretch in Our Synth-X MoCap Suit

When our pursuit to redesign our new 3x3 stretch Synth-X motion capture suit, we knew that comfort and durability were the two biggest components we wanted to incorporate. After testing several different types of fabrics and finding that none of them gave us the look, feel and capabilities that we were looking for in a mocap suit, we decided that we needed to create an entirely new fabric. In our testing, we found that having a two-way stretch wouldn’t work because it didn’t allow for enough movement during performance capture. However, the four-way stretch materials allowed for too much movement, resulting in a stretched-out suit after hours of filming. Finally, we came to the conclusion of finding a way to incorporate a 3x3 stretch. This allowed the same durability as the four-way stretch without ending the day with a stretchy, loose fitting suit. 

Having a 3x3 stretch has also incorporated a stronger hold for the mocap markers. Because the 3x3 stretch material doesn’t lose its fit, the markers never lose their traction. We continue to have customers tell that after wearing our 3x3 stretch mocap suit for days, they never had a single marker fall off during performance capture. Some were wearing this suit for 12 hours and were shooting action scenes the entire day. Others were working on projects for weeks at a time.
