"Although those dolls come to life as cg figurines, they were not completely digital creations. Director Robert Zemeckis, was adamant that the dolls – and particularly their faces – be realized in a more life-like manner and one that didn’t involve the lengthy process of translating facial capture into a final performance" explains Ian Failes in an article for Cartoon Brew.
